Toys for Tots
Give a child a smile this ChristmasKizer Dental Associates encourages staff and patients alike to contribute to the local U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Each year we serve as a drop off location and collect as many new, unwrapped gifts as possible for children in the community. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. We hope you'll join in on the joy of giving this Christmas season! Learn more here.
2014 Race for the Cure
Memphis War Eagles AAU Basketball
Dr. Kizer gives back to the community in several different ways. He is a volunteer for Dentistry with a Heart and The Church Health Center, and he has taken several medical/dental mission trips to Mexico. He is also on the Board of the Memphis Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Chairman of The Liberty Bowl Prayer Breakfast. However, most of his time is dedicated to serving as the director of the Memphis FCA War Eagles AAU Basketball Program. Dr. Kizer has been involved with this program since 1980, when he was a member of the War Eagles basketball team himself. He began coaching in the program in 1993, and he is now the director for the entire Memphis War Eagles program, which includes 2nd- 8th graders. These teams compete at a national level, and for the years of 2008-2013, the Memphis War Eagles Program was ranked the #1 AAU program in the nation. His ministry has reached players from all over the Mid-South, many of whom have gone on to play in college and even some to the NBA. The team he is the head coach of won state championships 2000, 2007, 2009, and 2012. Dr. Kizer believes it is more than just a basketball team. When the team travels, they participate in Bible studies and have team prayer before games and at every practice. Dr. Kizer finds his involvement with the Memphis War Eagles to be an opportunity to be a positive Christian influence in the lives of Memphis’s youth.
Susan G. Komen
One of the causes we are passionate about is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K. In 2007, Team Kizer accepted the challenge to raise funds in support of the Memphis-MidSouth Susan G. Komen for the Cure each year. Team Kizer consists of staff, patients, friends, and family members. They believe that even one person can make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Participating in the Memphis-MidSouth Race for the Cure 5K event is something they look forward to each October. Susan G. Komen’s mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening, and treatment. To find out more about this worthwhile effort, we welcome you to visit www.raceforthecurememphis.org.
Muscular Dystrophy Association
We are also dedicated to involvement with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Our office manager, Jennifer Isenhower, was recently recruited to participate in the MDA Executive Lock Up. This event raises funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), which is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related diseases by funding worldwide research. A Shelby County Sheriff’s officer served Jennifer a warrant and arrested her on March 5, 2014. She was taken to jail at the MDA Lock Location at Jim’s Place Grille in Collierville, Tennessee. She was held there until she raised her “bail” money. The bail money she raised will be used to send children with various muscle diseases to camp this summer. Through the help of her KDA friends and family, Jennifer raised over $2500 that day for MDA.
The Oral Cancer Foundation
Kizer Dental Associates is planning an upcoming event on Monday, April 28, 2014 to raise awareness about oral cancer. Dr. Kizer is a member of The Oral Cancer Foundation, which is a national public service, non-profit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and patient support activities. At our first Oral Cancer Awareness event, we will provide a free oral cancer screening to anyone who is in need. To schedule your appointment for this event, please call 901-767-4882.
In our office, we seek to provide patients access to the newest and most effective scientific screening and treatment. We use the Identafi® Oral Cancer Screening Device to screen for oral cancer. The Oral Cancer Foundation estimates that one American dies every hour from oral cancer. Late detection is the primary cause that both the incidence and mortality rates of oral cancer continue to increase. As with most cancers, age is the primary risk factor for oral cancer. Tobacco and alcohol use are other major predisposing risk factors, but more than 25% of oral cancer victims have no such lifestyle risk factors. Scientists have recently established a connection between HPV viral infection in the mouth and the occurrence of oral cancer. We encourage you to discuss with us your questions related to oral cancer.
